Chapin Labor Day Festival

Last week we were at the Chapin Labor Day festival. Actually it was more me than we. Lindsey wasn't available so I went solo. Driving up from Charleston, I passed the small town without even knowing it. I thought I hailed from a small town, but my hometown of Salem Ohio has got nothing on Chapin. There are quite literally two stop lights, a gas station, a couple shops, and a town square area so small I could throw a baseball past it, and I have no throwing arm. With that said, I was expecting a rather small turn out for this festival. My expectations were dead wrong. Thousands of people showed up. I was blown away. The town of Chapin is actually very densely populated with some of the most friendly and outgoing people. I was also very surprised at number of youth. Their schools are huge and apparently they are actually ranked number 1 in the state. This small town had a graduating class last year of close to 300 students and I believe their entire high school consists of over 1,000 students. I mean, we had just over 1,000 students at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston Salem NC! Crazy.
It was actually a very effective day. The majority of people that I spoke with had no idea what a Credit Union was but were enthusiastic about joining. I really wish Lindsey had been there because I would have loved to have shot a few interviews, but with just one person manning the tent it just wasn't possible. Actually if it wasn't for the help of another vendor who was set up beside me, it would have been very tricky setting up and breaking everything down on my own. It turned out the guy beside me, Rob Tutich, was a bit of a cyclist and runner. We shared some great conversations and helped each out throughout the event as he was on his own too promoting his mobile marine service company. Ironically the festival coordinator set the CREDIT UNION display directly infront of a WACHOVIA. Coincidence? Ha! Take that banks! I'd love to post some photos in here, but the way the blog is set up right now, it isn't possible. I'm told we're working on revamping the site so for now just head over to the photos section of the site to see pictures from this event as well as from the USA Cycling Championships and others.
